Dubai's Union Properties is planning to build a Formula One track by mid-2003. The property firm wants to create the 5-km F1 circuit as the centrepiece of a motor sports complex.
The 7.5-sq km Dubai Autodrome and Business Park will also house 1.2 km indoor and outdoor go-karting tracks, an off-road driving course and special tracks for motorcycle racing.
It will be built at the junction of the Emirates Highway and the Al Ain Highway.
The Business Park will have a selection of purpose-designed warehouses to cater for the motoring and motor sports industry.
The complex will also include a grandstand, hotels, retail showrooms that cater to motor sports participants and fans, and food and beverage outlets.
Anis Al Jallaf, chairman of Union Properties said: "Not only are we offering the motoring community their own purpose-built area for racing and trading, but the Autodrome will put Dubai on the map with regard to international motor sports events."
He did not indicated how much the project would cost.
Paul Berger, director of Middle East Racing Services which will be involved with Union Properties in developing the plans for the Autodrome, said: "The Formula One track, which is about the same length as Silverstone in the UK, will be built to full FIA (Federation Internationale De L'Automobile) specifications."
