EMIRATES Aluminium Company (Emal) has selected Montreal-based SNC-Lavalin Group to undertake construction of Phase Two of its smelter project in Abu Dhabi in the UAE.

The project will increase annual aluminium production capacity by 525,000 tonnes on completion in 2014. SNC-Lavailin managed the construction of the first phase of the smelter, which has a capacity of 750,000 tonnes of aluminium per year.

Phase Two will include a power plant capable of producing 1,000 MW of electricity and a 1.7-km-long potline, which SNC says will be the longest ever built.
