WHAT started out as a transportation operation with just a single taxi pick-up truck 38 years ago has grown into one of Bahrain’s major companies active in diverse sectors.
Today, the Al Taweel Group is involved in a number of large projects in Bahrain, including excavation works at the Amwaj Islands project, excavation of bridge foundation at Durrat Al Bahrain, various kinds of civil works at Riffa Views, and earthworks, backfilling and excavation at the Al Dur power station.
The group is a family business with more than 38 years’ experience in the Bahrain market.
Tracing the growth of the group, Jabber Al Taweel, managing director, says: “The company began as a heavy transportation operation, and has since branched out to include earthworks, quarrying, civil and commercial construction and heavy equipment leasing, trading and servicing. The company was established by my brother, Ali Al Taweel, in 1968 with just one taxi pick-up truck. In 1970, he acquired a heavy goods vehicle licence and in the same year, Al Taweel Contracting Establishment was given a commercial licence, and started with a staff of 30 in the light construction industry, building villas and small apartment blocks, and leasing light and heavy equipment.”
Over three decades, the group’s workforce was grown significantly, and the scope of its activities increased to include heavy ground works, civil contracting and construction.
“Al Taweel Garage was also launched in 1972 for the maintenance and servicing of heavy equipment.
“In 1985, the company’s scope of activity was further extended to include subcontracting works, to carry out excavations for cable trenches and water pipelines for the Ministry of Power and Water, Batelco and Bahrain Defence Force (BDF).
Further expansion and diversification saw the establishment of a trading division for heavy equipment spare parts. In 1993, Al Taweel Crusher Plant was added to the group’s portfolio of companies to providing quarried materials such as rock and aggregate to its sites as well as to contractors in the construction industry, says Jabber.
Today, Ali Al Taweel manages the group with the support of his brothers and sons. Al Taweel group continues to grow year on year, providing efficient and reliable support through the leasing of heavy equipment and the timely supply of quality product and services.
The group is now re-positioning itself as a key player in the construction industry, providing dependable services in all fields ranging from leasing of heavy equipment and trading to earthworks and the provision of building materials and premium agricultural and landscaping services.
To ensure that the group maintains a competitive edge in the heavy construction industry, it is currently upgrading its fleet and acquiring the latest technology from several agencies such as Hyundai wheel loaders and excavators from Motor City Holding, Volvo construction and road machinery from AA Bin Hindi Group, Mitsubishi trucks from Al Zayani Motors, XCMG graders and Komatsu excavators from YK Almoayyed and others.
“Our permanent workforce is also being increased to cope with the customer demands, and our directors have plans for the rest of GCC too,” adds Jabber.
