The kingdom has planned the construction of 90 new water dams this year at a total cost of SR1.16 billion ($309.3 million), mainly to feed its rapidly diminishing underground aquifers, crucial for the agricultural sector.
The project will raise the total capacity of water dams in the kingdom to 2 billion cu m, a spokesman for the Water and Electricity Ministry said.
Official statistics show Saudi Arabia has 223 dams with a total capacity of 836 million cu m. Last year, the kingdom had launched a plan to overhaul the state-owned water sector and prepare it within a decade for complete privatisation, including that of 30 seawater desalination plants.
