Tender values soar by 163pc

Booming development in Bahrain has pushed the value of government tenders awarded in the last three years to BD1.25 billion ($3.33 billion).

Tender values soared by 163 per cent last year to BD640 million, said Minister of State and chairman of the Tender Board and of the National Oil and Gas Authority, Dr Abdul Hussain Mirza.
A total of 3,950 tenders have been awarded from January 2003 to December 2005, he said.
“This reflects an increase in the numbers of government projects and also an increase in the confidence and credibility of the Tender Board,” said Dr Mirza.
The number of tenders awarded over the past three years has increased steadily from 1,142 in 2003, to 1,386 in 2004 and 1,422 last year, Dr Mirza pointed out.
The value of projects awarded in 2003 was BD213 million, which increased by 14 per cent to BD243 million in 2004, when the number of projects increased by 21 per cent, he said.
