The Sharjah Municipality has finished 50 per cent of the drainage network in the city and will complete the project within five years, according to a report.
A report released by the municipality stated that it had started the work under the sixth phase of the drainage project, which will help to increase capacity to 140,000 cu m. The report said that the first five phases of the project cost Dh400 million ($109 million). The project was started in 1976.
With the completion of the fifth phase of the project, the capacity was expanded to 107,000 cu m, to serve about 500,000 inhabitants. The municipality has planned to finish the network on the West of Waset Street, up to the beach, by the end of this year.
The municipality is also working to develop and modernise its plants currently in operation, including the pumping plants at Al Faiha, Al Yarmook, Al Ghubaiba, Halwan, Al Azra and Kalba.
