The Bahrain Society of Engineers (BSE) has appealed to the government to make it nationally responsible for overseeing all engineering professional practice.

The suggestion is included in a report presented to the Labour and Social Affairs Ministry by the society, which will soon be converted into a union.

"The ministry had earlier asked us to present our suggestions, before legally changing the society into a union under the new Bahrain Workers Trade Union Law," said BSE president Saeed Asbool.

One of the prime calls is to authorise BSE as the sole legal body for overseeing all engineering professional practice in the country, said Asbool.

Currently, it is being done by a separate committee constituted by the government.

The society has about 1,000 engineers on its rolls, of whom 20 per cent are expatriates.
