WORK on the Light Rail Transport (LRT) project in Lusail, Qatar, is on schedule with all the excavation and work on 7 km of tunnels having been completed, according to Qatar Rail, its developer.

The main civil works of seven underground stations have also been accomplished, said Saad Al Muhannadi, Qatar Rail’s CEO, who recently accompanied Qatar’s Minister of Transport Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti and Abdulla Abdulaziz Al Subaie, managing director of Qatar Rail, on a tour of the project.

“The next stage of this project would see the implementation of civil works for the 37 stations, the internal architecture, the mechanical and electrical equipment, the track, the power supply, the maintenance facilities and the trains,” Muhannadi explained.

The LRT project comprises four operating lines, totalling 33 km of network and including 37 stations, which include 10 underground stations. The LRT would also be connected to the Doha Metro Red Line North via two main stations – Lusail Marina/The Pearl and Lusail’s main station – which would facilitate transportation from and into Lusail city.

“We have so far completed 100 per cent of the excavation works, 98 per cent of the structure of underground stations for the Lusail project and 100 per cent of the bridge that crosses over the Al Khor Highway. Work is also under way to implement the final phase of the project, which includes the rolling stock systems,” said Subaie.

The LRT is an advanced transportation system for Lusail City, a project located on the waterfront, north of Doha. It extends across an area of more than a 35 sq km and is expected to accommodate 500,000 people.
