The Dynamic Tower, the world’s first rotating skyscraper, has been named one of Time magazine’s 50 Best Inventions of the Year for its revolutionary design and innovations.
And its architect David Fisher, has been honoured as the worldwide Architect of the Year 2008 by The Developer & Builders Alliance (DBA), one of the leading worldwide organisations in the field of real estate and construction.
Fisher’s Dynamic Tower – the first of which is to be built in Dubai with more rotating towers to follow in other cities – majorly challenges the development of architecture, as it defies the static to embrace the dynamic, enabling its shape to change according to meteorological factors, changing needs and desires.
In line with Fisher’s slogan ‘Designed by life, shaped by time’, his Dynamic Tower is the first building to feature the fourth dimension: time.
Fisher believes in starting a new era of architecture which will witness technologically highly evolved buildings that continuously change shape, resulting in unique and ever-evolving architectural landmarks.
In addition, Fisher prioritises environmental issues: wind turbines are positioned between the floors of the towers resulting in completely self-powered buildings. Solar panels contribute to this effect.
Furthermore, there is a third revolutionary aspect to the towers: they are to be the first completely pre-fabricated high-rise buildings. They are installed mechanically on site, offering a custom-made, high-quality solution while reducing time and cost of construction, as well as minimising on-site risks on a clean and ecological construction site.
The construction process starts with the top floor (80th), as the prefabricated units are assembled around the concrete core floor by floor, spiralling downward, until the ground floor is completed.
In a dynamic tower, the occupant will be able to park his car right next to his entrance door, and while he relaxes in his swimming pool he will be able to enjoy the ever-changing view onto a rotating world, and express his preferences to the voice-activated speed control.
Dynamic Tower was one of Time’s top selections in its eight annual list of ‘The 50 Best Inventions of the Year’ for 2008 featured in its November 10th issue, and on the magazine’s website.
“We are thrilled to be recognised by Time as one of the most innovative inventions and technological developments of our time,” Fisher stated. “For thousands of years, buildings were static, but the Dynamic Tower will radically change construction and real estate and bring a new dimension to architecture and our way of living.”
Meanwhile, the DBA chose Fisher as the worldwide Architect of the Year 2008 out of a record number of 2325 nominees. The top six finalists to the award were Foster & Partners, Jean Nouvel, Santiago Calatrava, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects, Zaha Hadid and David Fisher’s Dynamic Architecture.
The award ceremony took place last month in Florida, US.
“I am honoured to receive this award from the DBA, as I believe strongly in the group’s stated goal of improving our global economy by fostering prosperous worldwide business relationships through successful projects and innovation,” Fisher said.
Fisher, the inventor of the “Dynamic Architecture” graduated from the University of Florence, Italy, practised architecture and explored the development of methods, construction and real estate in a number of countries.
Four years ago, Fisher was inspired by the view onto the ocean in a North Miami beach apartment. There the idea of a rotating floor emerged for the first time.
Fisher is currently meeting with developers to discuss a possible Dynamic Tower in Miami.
