The UAE Ministry of Public Works and Housing has floated a tender for the construction of the Dubai-Fujairah Freeway which once completed will halve the travelling time between the two emirates.
The 80-km dual expressway - Contract No 4, Fujairah Ring Road - will be built at a cost of between Dh500 million ($136.2 million) and Dh600 million.
The highway, to run across mountains and low-lying areas, will offer virtually a non-stop journey between Dubai and Fujairah and reduce drive time by almost half.
It will also provide the fastest transfers between the east and west coasts.
Interested contractors specialised in road works and bridges registered with the ministry have been invited to submit their bids on or before September 15. Contractors have also been urged to submit an initial unconditional and irrevocable bank guarantee of not less than five per cent of their offers, along with the bids. Tender document fee has been fixed at Dh25,000.
Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer, acting minister for Public Works and Housing, had recently said the ministry is keen to develop all federal roads and will construct an alternative to the existing one connecting Sharjah with Ras Al Khaimah, in addition to the Dubai-Fujairah Freeway.
The ministry will also begin work on the existing Umm Al Quwain-Falaj Al Mulla Road in Al Surrah area, which will end in Al Rifaa area connecting Sharjah with Ras Al Khaimah.
The total cost of the road is Dh149 million and is expected to be ready by 2005.
