Doosan Enerbility (formerly known as Doosan Heavy Industries) has announced that it had secured a contract worth KRW1.6 trillion ($1.21 billion) from Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) for the construction of a turbine island as part of the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in Egypt.
As per the deal, Doosan Enerbility will complete the construction work on a total of 82 buildings and structures, including the turbine building as well as the setting up of the water treatment and air-conditioning systems, by 2029, with preparations also being made to have the turbine and generator installed.
Turbine island, also referred to as the secondary circuit, is the turbine and generator-related equipment that is used to produce electrical energy. The primary circuit refers to the nuclear steam supply system consisting of main components, such as the reactor and steam generator.
According to Doosan Enerbility, the El Dabaa project was won in 2017 by ASE JSC, a subsidiary of Russia’s state-owned nuclear power company Rosatom, from the Egyptian Atomic Energy Agency (NPPA). In August, ASE had signed up KHNP as the contractor for the turbine island project. The construction of the Tower No. 1 is scheduled to commence in August 2023.
Under the project, four 1,200 MW reactors are to be built at a site located 300 km northwest of Cairo.
