King Hamad General Hospital ... nearing completion.

KING Hamad General Hospital (KHGH), currently being constructed under the direction of the Ministry of Works, is one of the biggest single public sector health projects that Bahrain has seen in recent years. It will bring the latest in healthcare to the kingdom in the form of a landmark 312-bed general hospital occupying a 227,000-sq-m site on the coast of Muharraq.

The project, launched in September 2006, is scheduled for completion in April (excluding the installation of medical equipment). The Nass-Burhan joint venture is the main contractor, while the design and supervision consultant is Australian Hospital Design Group. Davis Langdon is the quantity surveying consultants.
The hospital will play a significant role in meeting current and future demand for public health services of all residents of Bahrain by offering treatment in major medical and surgical specialties, as well as an accident and emergency and intensive care. Treatment in obstetrics and gynecology, neonatal pediatrics, pediatrics, intensive care, ophthalmology, ENT, internal medicine and general surgery and emergency, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and outpatient clinics will be available.
The KHGH complex has a total floor area of 64,000 sq m spread across three four-storey buildings linked by enclosed bridges. It will have six operating theatres and numerous internal medicine suites, a range of diagnostic services, a 12-bed intensive care unit, a 23-bed accident and emergency unit, and a dedicated pediatric inpatient ward unit. The hospital will have a helipad on the eastern side of its grounds, allowing rapid patient transfer in case of emergencies.
In addition to providing in-patient and outpatient facilities, the KHGH will also offer clinical training facilities to the adjacent Bahrain Medical University. This will allow students of medicine and nursing to benefit from the convenience of studying and undergoing clinical experience in the same environment. A 190-seat lecture theatre conference room will be used by the faculty and students of the university and also to host local and international medical events.
