The requirements for building structures such as roofs are ever-changing.

On the one hand, there has been a rise in the requirements for thermal performance, U-values, ecological profile and simplicity in installation. On the other, there is a demand for reasonably-priced system solutions, which, on the basis of their specific performance, offer a simple and clean finish.

However, a simple formula for a good roofing or waterproofing application remains constant, says Sarnafil International AG of Switzerland. It is:

Expert Design + Proven Materials + Skilful Workmanship

= Quality Roof or Waterproofing Application

All three components must work together to produce a successful long-term solution. Without all three, there are more chances for error than success.

Sarnafil has a flexible approach to roofing applications. Whatever the building size and shape, whatever the environmental condition, Sarnafil has a system that's equal to the challenge: mechanically attached, adhered system and ballasted systems and a protected membrane assembly (PMA).

There's a choice in the thickness of Sarnafil membranes too. Standard rolls of membrane are available in 6'6" wide and standard lengths up to 100' long. Whether it's a manufacturing facility or corporate offices, a high rise or a school, a hospital, an arena, a museum, a warehouse, or a parking garage - Sarnafil offers an efficient system for moisture protection around the world.

Sarnafil International has more than 35 years experience in the development and manufacture of synthetics. Part of its experience in the application of polyolefin-based materials is drawn from the civil engineering sector which, since 1979, has been employing such materials in various waterproofing systems. The other crucial part stems from the stages of development of Sarnafil T which started in the early 80s.

The new generation material Sarnafil T belongs to the group of flexible polyolefins (FPO). The polyolefins include the plastics polyethylene and polypropylene used in mass production.

Since polyolefins are thermoplastics and can be repeatedly melted, they are an easily recyclable raw material. Sarnafil T contains no plasticiser and are free of chlorine, heavy metals and halogen.

Flat roofs

Sarnafil TG 66/TS 77 membranes combine all the economical and ecological features of a modern flat roofing system. They do not merely meet but actually exceed all current standards.

They are compatible in direct contact with common building materials. Their bitumen and polystyrene compatibility, in particular, should be stressed.

Sarnafil TG 66/TS 77 are ideally suited for refurbishing existing bitumen roofs. In addition, due to their special formulation and the fact that they do not contain plasticiser, they offer exceptional chemical resistance, even at high temperatures.

Depending upon the system required, mechanically-fastened (linear or spot fastening), gravel-ballasted or planted flat roofs, as well as roofs with pedestrian or vehicle surface, may be installed.

TG 66/TS 77 are suitable for all support structures, concrete, steel or timber substrates or inverted roof system. TG 66 is used for all loosely-laid systems with ballast layer while TS 77 is used for mechanically-fastened systems.

In Sarnafil TS 77, the carrier material is a combination of glass mat and polyester scrim which gives the product its high tensile strength and relatively low elongation-at-break.

Sarnafil TS77 is:

  • Bitumen and polystyrene compatible;

  • Dimensionally stable;

  • Meets high ecological standards;

  • Easy to work with and tear-resistant;

  • Puncture resistant;

  • Weathering resistant; and

  • Root-penetration proof.

    Sarnafil flat roofing systems are equally suitable for new buildings as well as meeting the requirements for refurbishing old roofs. Membranes can be joined easily and securely using the proven and tested hot-air welding technique. High flexibility also ensures effortless installation even at complicated roof sections.

    TG 66 and TS 77 for roofing systems offer the following properties::

  • Economical;

  • Long life span;

  • High mechanical resistance;

  • Resistant to most chemicals;

  • Bitumen compatible;

  • Root resistant;

  • Fully recyclable;

  • Excellent thermal weldability; and

  • Simple installation

    Pitched roofs

    Sarnafil TU combines different properties in one product more completely than any other roof lining.

    Despite its low diffusion resistance, Sarnafil TU offers superior properties with respect to freeze and thaw stresses in the seam, as well as in the sheet area.

    It is the only diffusion permeable system offering the option of being either welded or taped. It thus caters to all application requirements.

    Depending upon the load during installation and when in use, all joints and perimeter and wall flashing may be either continuously welded by the proven welding technique or fully taped.

    Sarnafil TU roof lining also features a non-slip surface offering the installer maximum safety on the roof.

    The advantages and efficiency of these new roof lining systems have been achieved by ensuring a low diffusion resistance, non-skid surface and a watertight material and joints. The combination of these features, together with a clear and secure method of installation into a single, ecologically sound product, is what make this system so unique.

    Sarnafil waterproofing membranes, which are available in various types, thicknesses and colours, are complemented by a comprehensive range of accessories such as pre-fabricated parts, coated metal sheets, vapour barriers, adhesives, fasteners, drains as well as matching tools and appliances, thus offering the client complete systems with high reliability.
