More than 20 per cent of the dredging and reclamation work on the BD1 billion ($2.65 billion) Northern Town off the Duraz coast in Bahrain has been completed, according to a government official.

The new town, to be built over an area of 1,000 hectares, is divided into 14 islands with a target of providing 15,000 government houses by 2016.
Construction work on the project is expected to begin next February when the reclamation work is completed on the two islands closest to the mainland, comprising 1,500 houses between them.
Once the BD66 million reclamation works on all islands is completed in 2008, an additional 1,500 homes will be built every year, said Works and Housing Minister Fahmi Al Jowder. “We want to have 15,000 government houses in the town, which will be mainly allocated to people from the Northern Governorate who are on our waiting lists,” he said.
