Alico is a specialist in curtain walling systems, which it manufactures under licence with Schuco, one of the foremost manufacturers in the world.
In simple terms, a curtain wall comprises a frame of grid members fixed to the face of a structure usually at each floor level and the infilling of panels, glazed or solid, as may be required to perform the functions of both window and wall.
A curtain walling system’s prime features include extruded integrated drainage channels, thermal efficiency, ventilation and drainage at all four corners of each module and module tolerances for expansion.
As a licensed manufacturer of Schuco windows and curtain wall systems, Alico is able to assure its customers of the highest technical design standards. There is constant interchange of the latest technology between Alico and Schuco.
Alico-Schuco structural glazing systems provide the architect and building owners flexibility and latitude to achieve the architectural intent.
Doors and windows are vital and also present insulation and security challenges in terms of reducing energy usage and air-conditioning costs and user safety and security. To meet the needs of insulation, safety and security, Alico has introduced Schuco Iskotherm (thermally broken sections) doors and windows, reliable and tested insulated double glass units and toughened glass.
Metal sheet fabrication
The key aspect of Alico’s fabrications division is versatility in manufacturing a wide range of products in a variety of metals – aluminium, stainless steel, brass, bronze, copper or whatever is best suited to the application.
Although the fabrications division has earned a reputation for producing high-quality ‘one-off’ fabrications to customer requirements, a number of standard architectural systems have been developed to suit various applications.
One such system is Alico’s range of handrails/balustrades, which is extremely comprehensive. Handrails are available in various metals and styles – the elegance and lustre of brass and bronze; the modernity of stainless steel, the colour options of polyester powder or PVDF-coated aluminium; and the richness and warmth of timber. Glass railing systems free of vertical balusters are an Alico speciality. Dubai Airport has kilometres of these free-standing glass railings.
Skylights
Schuco rooflight systems provide customised solutions to satisfy almost any demand. These systems permit designs in pyramid, dome or pitched form. The applications can be as diverse as large rooflights for commercial buildings and shopping malls and smaller domes for residential properties.
Alicore honeycomb panels
Alico manufactures composite panels under the trade name Alicore. The foundation for these composites is a honeycomb core which – when compared to traditional materials – provide excellent strength-to-weight ratio, an extremely low comparative weight, exceptional flatness on flat panels and a virtually infinite range of colours.
Alicore panels are available with a variety of facing skin options, typical of which are: aluminium (available in both PVF2 and polyester powder coat), glass fibre, aramid fibres (for example, Kevlar), carbon fibre and stainless steel. With the fibre types, other materials such as Formica can be laminated onto the face giving an even wider choice.
Modern architecture reflects a growing trend towards adopting space structures in design packages. Space structures combine the benefits of aesthetics and economics. Attractive and pleasing in appearance, space structures are capable of spanning large distances and covering large areas. And, when properly designed and fabricated, they are said to be more economical than other, more conventional, linear or planar systems.
Applied coatings
Alico offers polyester powder coating and PVDF (Kynar 500) wet paint coating. These paint coatings provide a highly attractive, durable finish to what has long been acknowledged as a superbly practical material.
Both polyester powder and PVDF coatings can be applied to all Alico products, including castings and fabrications in a variety of metals. All materials to be coated undergo extensive chemical pre-treatment to prepare them for final coating.
Alico is an approved applicator of PPG and Valspar for the wet paint, and Jotun for the powder coating. Alico is also Qualicoat certified.
Alico Test Centre
Another ‘first’ by Alico is the development of a full-fledged test centre capable of carrying out performance tests for curtain walls in accordance with ASTM, DIN and BS standards. The Alico Test Centre is equipped with facilities to conduct environmental tests to international standards with international organisations such as Bureau Veritas providing independent test certificates. Alico’s technical advisory service can determine the performance characteristics of any curtain walling system.
