Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, unveils Ducab's new copper rod plant.

Dubai Cables Company (Ducab) last month inaugurated its first copper rod plant and a new cable factory at Mussafah industrial area in Abu Dhabi, which it says will help the company replace imported copper rod with material manufactured in the UAE and further strengthen the country’s industrial base.

By launching the two new plants, Ducab, which is jointly owned by the Dubai and Abu Dhabi governments, is on course to achieving its strategic plan of meeting the growing demand of the local and regional markets for copper rod and power cables of various voltages.
The 3,000 sq m, $45 million copper rod plant, the first in the UAE, will initially produce 110,000 tonnes per annum, which will be later increased to 160,000 tonnes.
The new cable facility will boost Ducab’s cable manufacturing capacity by 40 per cent.
“The state-of-the-art copper rod factory will apply the highest international quality standards and will provide all of the Ducab’s rod requirements,” says Ahmad bin Hassan Al Sheikh, Ducab chairman. “In addition, it will also try to meet the requirements of the regional market.”
“The new copper rod plant will take the raw copper cathode and convert it to high-quality 8 mm diameter copper rod – the key raw material for cable manufacture,” says Ducab managing director, Andrew Shaw.
Commenting on the new Abu Dhabi cable facility, he says that the acquisition was done to ensure the company had enough capacity to satisfy demand. “As a market leader we are committed to continual improvement in all aspects of our business and, with this new facility we will be able to further improve product offer, service and delivery to our customers,” he adds.
