ESR Technology has been contracted by the Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) to upgrade the company's three airstrips to meet aviation safety requirements.
The airstrips are at Fahud, Qarn Alam and Marmul in Oman. The upgrades will increase capacity and introduce paved runways, taxiways and apron capable of supporting operations with B737-type aircraft. The airports are expected to be operational by the start of 2008.
This development is a key part of PDO’s integrated transportation strategy. It will result in a faster, more comfortable and higher capacity transport system for production workers with an associated reduction in risk from journeys in hazardous desert regions, said an official spokesman.
Oman’s aviation regulator, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Meteorology (DGCAM), is demanding that the new airports are built to international safety standards.
PDO has contracted ESR Technology to provide support and guidance to achieve international safety levels and to apply ICAO standards during the construction of all three airports.
To date the design work for all three airports is almost complete and the reconstruction of the runways is now under way. Construction of the terminal buildings and other facilities has also commenced.
