More than 50 per cent of the reclamation work on the BD1 billion ($268 million) Northern Town off Bahrain’s Duraz coast has been completed.
About 25 per cent of the support stones have been set up around the town, which will be built in an area of 740 hectares and is divided into 14 islands.
The target is to provide 15,000 government houses by 2016.
Construction work on 1,500 houses, which are currently being designed, is expected to begin this year when reclamation work is completed on the two islands closest to the mainland. Once the BD66 million reclamation work on all islands is completed next year, an additional 1,500 homes will be built every year, said Works and Housing Minister Fahmi Al Jowder.
“We want to have 15,000 government houses in the town, which will be allocated based on our waiting lists, with preference for those who live in the Northern Governorate,” he said.
“The aim is to provide 75,000 people with government homes in the project,” he adds.
