QATAR has signed contracts with cement suppliers from the UAE and Oman in order to meet an anticipated rise in demand for cement and avert any possible rise in prices, the local Peninsula newspaper said, quoting Global Investment Houses’ GCC Construction Contractors – 4Q12 report.
Cement production in Qatar will not be enough to meet future demand, and is likely to result in a shortage of almost three million tonnes a year by 2015, it said.
It said that Qatar was also facing serious shortage of skilled labour due to persistent lower salaries and that companies “are unable to source workers from regions such as Asia”.
It said that Qatar and Saudi Arabia were both facing a considerable rise in building material and labour costs while the UAE was “witnessing consolidation and high competition within the industry”.
The total value of projects awarded in Qatar during Q4 in 2012 rose 52 per cent to $2.1 billion, it added.
