Al Jaber Engineering and Contracting (ALEC) has been awarded a contract to build the third concourse at Dubai International Airport.
The contract for Concourse 3 was awarded to ALEC by Dubai Aviation City Corporation on the heels of a consortium of builders including Murray and Roberts of South Africa and Leighton of Australia pulling out of a Dh4.9-billion ($1.33 billion) earlier contract for the same project.
The new contract for ALEC includes the construction, completion and maintenance of the civil, architectural, MEP (mechanical, electrical and plumbing), SAS (special airport systems) and signage works for the third concourse.
Concourse 3 will be dedicated to Emirates airline and will provide 20 gates including 18 specifically designed for A380 superjumbo aircraft. It will increase the passenger capacity at Dubai International Airport up to 68 million passengers per year.
ALEC is a subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi-based Al Jaber Group.
The company currently operates in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and has delivered significant landmark developments, managing to establish a distinguished name in the construction sector.
Earlier last month, the consortium of Murray and Roberts, Leighton, Al Habtoor Engineering and Takenaka pulled out the contract for the concourse, after four months of negotiations, following the award of the contract in December.
The consortium and the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) concluded “a mutually acceptable contract is not currently possible”, according to Murray and Roberts. The DCA said that completion of Concourse 3 will still be scheduled for the end of 2011.
