Abu Dhabi International Airport’s Terminal 3 is now fully operational, with the full transfer of flights from Terminal 1 to the new terminal.
The new $272-million facility – with 10 departure gates and covering a built-up area of 88,000 sq m – has expanded airport capacity to more than 12 million passengers a year, an increase of more than five million passengers, according to Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac).
As part of a phased opening strategy, which started in the final quarter of last year, the new terminal facilities went through rigorous testing and scrupulous technical assessment to ensure passenger comfort, safety and security. In the two months that followed, Adac and Etihad airlines worked hard to implement the transferring of the majority of Etihad flights to the new terminal.
Terminal 3 will help the airport meet short-term needs; while the Midfield Terminal Complex, due for completion in the few coming years, will provide long-term capacity for over 20 million passengers per year.
Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi International Airport’s new Logistics Park will commence welcoming tenants during the year. Construction of the first phase of development is under way, and work on Phase Two is expected to make a start in 2011, with the full project due to be completed by 2015. Once ready for operations, the park will offer tenants a wide choice of facilities, from light industrial units in various designs and locations, to commercial offices and plots of land for customised development to meet investors’ specific business requirements.
