Sumitomo’s hydraulic excavator, the SH200-5 Legest (termed as SH210-5 outside of Japan) has won the 18th Energy Conservation Award for its high fuel efficiency.

The award was presented by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan and Energy Conservation Centre, Japan, in January.
The award – which aims to recognise technology in order to promote energy conservation – is open to the public and covers energy conservation technology, equipment and system for non-military use.
“Sumitomo’s energy-saving technology is its distinctive feature that led to the award,” says a spokesman for the Japanese manufacturer. “The first award-winning product in the CE Industry, the SH200 Legest has been developed to ensure high fuel efficiency with environment protection in mind. Consequently, the SH200 Legest has achieved a 20 per cent fuel efficiency improvement in comparison with the conventional model, by integrating the new engine system Space 5 and new hydraulic system “SIH:S/”.
Earlier, last October, SH200-5 Legest was also awarded the Good Design Award 2007-2008. Good Design Award is considered to be Japan’s only comprehensive design evaluation and commendation system.
“The system itself has its origin in the ‘Good Design Selection System’ (generally known as the G-Mark System) instituted by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry in 1957,” he adds.
