The gazebo is made from specially-treated Burma teak, combined with stainless steel and copper.

Some of the joinery works for the Grand Hyatt Hotel were technically challenging, according to Wings Wood Products which used its innovative skills to carry out all the external joinery works at the project.

Its scope of works included the pergolas, timber chalets, gazebos and the swimming pool bar.

"The project - designed by Khatib & Alami and with Architeknik as consultant - is one of its kind," says Kamil Quddus, general manager with the Dubai-based company.

"The highlight of our job is a gazebo, which we believe is one of the largest wooden gazebos in the Gulf. It is a beautifully-designed massive structure comprising four wooden logs - each of which is 6 m long - with a copper canopy on top. The gazebo is made from specially-treated Burma teak, combined with stainless steel and copper, enabling the four logs to bear the load of the copper canopy.

"Another important feature is the 13-m diameter main pool bar made of Burmese teak, cedar wood and steel.

"All the structures were manufactured in parts in our factory and assembled at site.

"The project was a difficult one technically, requiring very high skills and standards. But we took up the challenge and completed it to the best of our ability. Having completed the project, we are satisfied with our efforts and believe we have achieved our target. Even the architects and engineers were amazed to see the effect of blending wood, steel and copper."

Wings Wood, which specialises in external joinery or superstructure joinery works, is one of the few companies in the UAE offering a total interior solution. It undertakes interior turnkey jobs for restaurants, various outlets, food courts, offices, guest rooms for hotels and palaces.

The company was launched 40 years ago as a carpentry workshop and soon started manufacturing all types of furniture for the local market, especially for hotels, embassies, shopping centres and government agencies. These items ranged from simple chairs and tables to mashrabiya panels.

Wings Wood Products has expanded its activities in a bid to fill the gap between the designing and the manufacturing sides of the furniture industry.

"Today, we have our own design studio, a project team comprising civil engineers and architects, a factory to produce high-quality furniture, a saw mill to get the best wood and our own timber treatment plant," says Quddus. "In order to be cost-effective, we directly import wood and raw materials from America, Canada, Africa and South East Asia."

Wings Wood today enfolds three other companies under its umbrella:

  • Timberpoint Woods Trading and Wings Wood Product (trading division), dealing with all kinds of American hardwoods, exotic veneers, medium and high-density fibreboard for walls and floors, veneered MDF (medium density fibreboard), melamine MDF and Bendy ply;

  • Timberpoint Furniture Products, which deals mainly with special-finish doors for kitchens, bathrooms, living and bedroom cabinets as well as display units for offices and commercial centre; and

  • Hajwings, a trading house, which is the company's office in Malaysia.

It also plans to open liaison offices in China, Canada and Qatar.

The company has recently renovated its offices and is also building a new state-of-the-art building in Dubai.

"Our new factory and offices are up-to-date and have been designed keeping future expansions in mind.

"We are also working towards achieving ISO 9002. We want to continue to be part of the ever-growing Dubai market and be competitive and carry out high-quality jobs."

Wing Wood Products is also launching an interactive web-site, with its own server, to cater to the international market. It is also gearing up for e-commerce.

The company is currently engaged in a number of projects in Dubai.
