Capella Diriyah taking shape in the Northern District.

Construction on the Capella Diriyah has reached an advanced stage within the Northern District of the Diriyah Gate masterplan, marking a significant milestone for the landmark development. This progress follows the 2024 award of a $2-billion construction contract by the Diriyah Company to a joint venture between Riyadh-based El-Seif Engineering Contracting and China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The contract encompasses a prestigious cluster of assets including King Salman University, the Misk Heritage Institute, and the sprawling King Salman Square.

Ahmad Al-Rashed Al-Humaid Consulting Engineers is serving as the project consultant.

The Capella Diriyah is now a visible milestone within this massive development block. With the primary structural works well advanced, the project is successfully translating international architecture and design practice Aedas’ vision of contemporary Najdi architecture into a physical reality. The 100-key luxury hotel, spanning more than 14,000 sq m, is being executed to ensure the seamless integration of traditional earthen aesthetics with modern structural integrity.

Capella Diriyah blends traditional aesthetics with modern structural integrity.

The development is a sophisticated reinterpretation of the region’s architectural narrative, bridging the gap between the historical “City of Earth” and modern luxury hospitality.

The design is deeply rooted in the traditional Najdi architectural style. Aedas has meticulously integrated the solid-void rhythms and earthen palettes characteristic of the region to create a structure that feels born from the land rather than imposed upon it. The hotel is organised around a deliberate sequence of courtyards, transitioning from active public zones to secluded, intimate retreats. This layered spatial hierarchy honours the social fabric of Saudi heritage, emphasising both community interaction and the importance of privacy.

Materiality and light play a fundamental role in the guest experience. The architecture utilises locally sourced stone and intricate geometric screens that filter the intense Saudi sun, casting dynamic shadows that shift throughout the day. In a unique nod to the clarity of the Saudi night sky, the project includes specialised stargazing spaces, featuring open-air terraces and select suites equipped with retractable roofs, allowing for a seamless connection with the celestial environment.

The landscaping of the Capella Diriyah is inspired by the natural contours of the Wadi, incorporating a sensory journey defined by water features and a grid of date palms that provide dappled shade. Native planting further enhances the “oasis” atmosphere, reinforcing the site’s ecological authenticity.
