A speciality hospital and two international-standard sports stadiums are among the major projects that Contraco, a Doha-based A-grade contractor is currently engaged in.

The Al Ahli Hospital - Qatar's first such private venture - is being set up by Al Ahli Hospital Company.

Contraco is responsible for the construction, completion, furnishing, equipping and maintenance of the 250-bed hospital under a $54 million contract. The consultant on the project is Dar Al Handasah.

Work on the project started in early 2001 and the contract period is 26 months.

The project is located at "C" Ring Road, near the TV and radio station compound in Doha.

The main hospital building is a four-storey structure with a central atrium and a separate services facilities block, together covering a total floor area of 27,700 sq m.

Other buildings within the complex include:

  • A car-park and intermediate care building comprising two levels of car parking spread over an area of 7,300 sq m and a single-level intermediate care unit covering 3,300 sq m; and

  • A five-storey building housing the nurses' residence with a total built-up area of 5,100 sq m.

All the buildings cover a footprint area of 10,000 sq m.

The contract also involves external works for the 40,000 sq m site comprising roads, car-parking, a mosque, hard standing areas, landscaping and irrigation, boundary walls and gates.

The main hospital block will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment and systems and sophisticated electromechanical and building management systems (BMS).

Meanwhile, Contraco is putting the finishing touches to the two new outdoor sports stadiums. Both the facilities are being built to IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) standards and are suited for international competitions, says a spokesman for Contraco.

The contract for the Al Ittehad Sports Stadium is valued at QR40.55 million ($11.14 million) while that for Al Rayyan Sports Stadium is worth QR44.85 million.

The Al Ittehad Sports Stadium is being built in Al Gharafah while the Al Rayyan Sports Stadium is located in Umm-Al-Afaa'i. The stadiums are being built for the Qatar National Olympic Committee. Qatar Design Consortium is the consultant for both the projects.

Each of the stadiums has a seating capacity for 25,000 spectators plus 500 VIP seats.

Each stadium comprises one main field and two training fields, one of them with a running track. The Al Ittehad Sports Stadium has one area designated for other sports facilities, while the Al Rayyan Stadium has two such areas. All the fields will be floodlit.

The complexes also have a medical centre, lodging facilities for players, conference rooms, dining halls, space for restaurants, security and central rooms.

The Al Ittehad Sports Stadium provides parking space for 1,000 cars while the Al Rayyan Stadium has a 3,500-slot car-park.

The stadiums are equipped with a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard, commentator booths, a press centre, and has provisions for a TV studio. They also have automatic irrigation systems.
