VOLVO Penta, the Volvo Group’s industrial and marine engine manufacturer, introduced two new 16-litre engines at the Middle East Electricity 2014 held in Dubai, UAE, last month (February 11 to 13).

The two new engines, TWD1652GE and TWD1653GE, complete Volvo Penta’s range of Stage IIIA-compliant power units. Volvo Penta’s Stage IIIA engines for gensets do not include an after treatment system, making them ideal for markets where high-sulphur fuel is used, according to a spokesman for the company.

However, in line with the company’s core value of environmental care, the engines burn cleanly and are fuel efficient. The Volvo Penta Stage IIIA will have the same installation footprint as the current Stage II engine for minimal customer impact.

With this latest addition, the Volvo Penta Stage IIIA-compliant GE range now offers prime power output starting at 86 kVA (TAD550GE) and going up to 600 kVA (TWD1652GE) and 650 kVA (TWD1653GE) at 1,500 rpm.

Durable and robust for optimum uptime, the new Stage IIIA engines are also notable for their low fuel consumption and low total cost of ownership. Volvo Penta’s complete genset line is certified to meet either Stage II or IIIA emissions levels. The engines provide a power range between 94 kVA and 700 kVA on standby. Nearly all engines in the range are dual speed, allowing them to run at 1,500 rpm in 50 Hz markets and at 1,800 rpm in 60 Hz markets.

In addition to the complete range of Stage II and Stage IIIA engines, a Stage IIIB-compliant 16-litre engine is also available.

“With their long service intervals, ease of serviceability and low oil volume, Volvo Penta engines are robust and reliable,” the spokesman said. “But when an engine needs to be serviced, it is backed by the strength of Volvo Penta’s extensive global service network and Volvo Genuine Parts supply, with dealers located in more than 100 countries.”

“We’ve tested our genset engines in harsh conditions around the world — from Antarctica to Saudi Arabia — to ensure the best possible uptime and performance,” said Giorgio Paris, Volvo Penta’s president of Region Emerging Markets. “Our powergen engines now come in a complete range of sizes and power levels that make them ideal for a wide variety of applications and working environments.”

Paris highlighted the company’s core values of quality, safety and environmental care. “We undertake extensive field testing and manufacturing in one of the world’s most advanced factories to ensure our engines are safe to use and of top quality.”

He also stressed Volvo Penta’s low total cost of ownership, which is driven by the company’s emphasis on environmental care. “With a long service interval – up to 1,000 hours on the 13- and 16-litre models – and low fuel consumption, Volvo Penta-powered gensets help customers reduce costs and maximise return on investment.”

Volvo Penta’s presence at Middle East Electricity signalled the company’s desire to raise the profile of its industrial and powergen engines in the region.

Paris concluded: “We were here to show that we’re dedicated to the power generation market in the Middle East. We have teamed up with key players in the area to create a top-class dealer network here. Our offerings demonstrate that we have the right technology and services to meet our customers’ needs, even in an area with difficult working conditions, like the Middle East.”
