The Bab gas compression facility, Habshan, Abu Dhabi ... powered by Cummins 24/7, 365 days a year.

CUMMINS Power Generation continues to boost its presence in the Middle East, with some of its highly reliable gensets recently installed at a number of projects throughout the region ranging from a hospital in Jordan to gas compression facilities in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and to shopping malls in Saudi Arabia.

The company has recently supplied more than a dozen generator sets to provide a total installed power of 30 MWe to a major Saudi shopping mall, replacing the utility power supply. Its distributor in the country, GCC-Olayan, replaced grid power at the Red Sea Mall – the largest mixed-use mall complex in Jeddah covering 242,200 sq m – with 18 DFHD generator sets that have been installed in a highly-soundproofed generator room. Work was carried out by electromechanical and rental specialist Al-Aman Company, a longstanding GCC-Olayan customer.

Meanwhile for the Bab gas compression facility in Habshan in Abu Dhabi, Cummins Power Generation designed a system capable of providing up to 3.6 MW of continuous power that is readily available 24/7, 365 days a year. The facility, part of the Thamama gas network, extracts gas from the Bab Gas Field, the largest onshore gas field in Abu Dhabi spanning 1,200 sq km.

Construction of the facility started in 2010 and was completed in February this year.

SK E&C, the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for the project, engaged Cummins Sales and Services Korea (CSSK), a distributor for Cummins Power Generation, to provide the continuous power system, on the back of the company’s reputation for high quality products and outstanding after-sales service support.

“With a high risk of incurring significant economic losses in the event of a power outage, there is a critical need for a reliable continuous power supply that is ready 24/7, 365 days a year to continue powering the facility should the main utility fail. In addition, the continuous power system was to be designed and commissioned in a timely manner, and was required to be capable of working seamlessly with other equipment or peripherals involved in the project,” the spokesman points out.

The system installed consists of three enclosed C2000D5 diesel generator sets with the ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions. These diesel generator sets are powered by QSK60G3 engines, and interface with microprocessor-based Cummins PowerCommand Digital Master Control 300 Paralleling System, integrated with switchgear.

“As the only manufacturer to offer fully integrated power systems, Cummins Power Generation’s PowerCommand microprocessor-based controls are capable of integrating diesel generator sets and digital master controls with switchgear into a complete system, utilising common communications protocols for seamless integration and enhanced reliability. These are essential requirements for this oil and gas project to ensure a high degree of design and performance control for reliable and efficient operation,” says the spokesman.

Elsewhere, the largest hospital in Jordan outside of the capital Amman has found the solution to its standby power needs, thanks to Cummins Power Generation and local distributor SETI Jordan. Prince Hashem Bin Al Hussein Military Hospital in Aqaba on the shores of the Red Sea now has an integrated system built around three C1675 D5 generator sets operating in parallel, providing reliable support to the hospital’s expanding facilities.

To provide the hospital with the 4.5 MVA of standby power it needs, SETI Jordan installed and commissioned a complete solution using Cummins Power Generation products including master controller, switchgear and automatic transfer switches. The system operates approximately 200 hours a year and works automatically, with the DMC 1000 controller hardwired into the hospital’s building management system.
