HALCROW will provide key supervisory and consultancy services on four projects within Qatar’s Expressway programme under a contract awarded by Qatar’s Public Works Authority
(Ashghal).
Halcrow, a part of CH2M Hill – a global leader in full-service engineering, construction, and operations – has been selected as the supervising engineer and design consultant for Group One, which includes two projects in the East-West corridor and two others in and around Al Wakrah town.
Under the deal, the firm will provide site supervision on the two projects in the East-West corridor, which is located to the south of Doha. Between the two sites, two 10-km, dual five-lane carriageways will be built as well as various grade-separated interchanges, footpaths and cycle paths. This aims to ease accessibility to both the New Industrial Area and the Barwa development within the area.
On the other two projects based in and around Al Wakrah, Halcrow will execute the concept design through to site supervision of the 11-km Al Wakrah Main Road, which runs through the centre of the city, as well as the design review and supervision of 11-km Al Wakrah Bypass running to the west.
The Al Wakrah Main Road project is expected to pose the biggest challenge to the team, as they work to deliver the huge urban highway design scheme.
Leading the team will be Alan Sharpe, Halcrow’s project director for the Doha Expressway project, which is expected engage 60 full-time permanent staff to be based in Doha, the UAE, Pakistan and India, and reach a peak of 250 staff once all four projects are fully mobilised.
Sharpe, who has 26 years of experience working on transportation projects in highways, bridges, infrastructure development and rail, said: “This is an exciting opportunity for CH2M Hill Halcrow to make our mark on this massive road infrastructure project in Qatar, and deliver solid design services and site supervision. We are confident that with our experience and expertise, we can deliver high quality results in a timely and effective manner.”
