SAUDI Arabia’s Red Sea Housing Services Company is constructing a major labour camp complex on the Red Sea shores to accommodate the workforce supporting the expansion of the country’s oil refinery in Rabigh.

The 12.14-sq-km facility, which is managed by Petro Rabigh, is believed to be the world’s largest integrated oil refinery and petrochemical production plant.

The labour camp complex will accommodate 9,000 employees of the Korean company working on the second phase of the refinery’s expansion.

The 170,000-sq-m site being constructed by Red Sea Housing for the Petro Rabigh project includes different accommodation units for senior and junior employees and labourers, business conference areas, data centres and utility buildings in addition to common staff areas, large kitchens, dining halls, basketball and tennis courts, mosques and supermarkets.

“Red Sea Housing has vast experience in building prefabricated and quality-certified labour housing for projects in remote locations, with a production capacity that exceeds 770,000 sq m per annum,” said Mohammed Othman Mallawi, investor relations manager of the company.

“Our contract in Rabigh will extend our success in mega prefabricated projects, given the large number of employees the site will have to accommodate,” he added.

Red Sea Housing has emerged as a preferred builder of labour accommodation due to its vast expertise in constructing labour camps and its ability to cater for all requirements of the tenants, including power, fresh water, waste-water treatment, food, laundry service and recreation centres.

Meanwhile, the company expects to begin construction of the first phase of a SR60-million ($15 million) industrial labour camp in Jazan Economic City (JEC) next year following the receipt of approval from the Economic Cities Authority (ECA).

The 188,999-sq-m labour camp will be constructed in phases and have a capacity of 10,000 residents. It will be operational by the second quarter of next year.

The housing units will enjoy an array of amenities and recreational facilities.
