AGRU Kunststofftechnik’s thermoplastic products were used to ensure the watertightness of potable tanks currently being built in Lusail City, Qatar, one of the largest construction sites in the world.
Lusail, located 17 km from the capital Doha, will be ready by 2022. It will provide luxury apartments for around 250,000 inhabitants and will be home to one of the largest and most modern stadiums that will host the Fifa World Cup matches.
High-quality thermoplastic products from the Austrian firm were used to protect the concrete foundation of the underground potable water storage tanks against corrosive groundwater (seawater) and infiltrations of media.
The tanks – each with a capacity of 150,000 cu m – are currently under construction and will cater to the population in the city.
The lining systems used – 33,600 sq m of 3-mm-thick AGRU PE100 Sure Grip concrete protective liner and 24,000 sq m of 3-mm-thick high-density polyethylene (HDPE) smooth liner – meet the high mechanical demands such as the approval of their use in potable water applications, said a spokesman for AGRU. These high-quality plastic products are installed and tested by AGRU’s experienced distributor QEMS – Qatar Engineering Material Solutions – at the job site.
AGRU’s welding rod, with a 4-mm circular cross-section, was also utilised on the project.
The project, which was started in December last year, “can be only finalised successfully with a material manufacturer and installation company with field experience of many years and the desire to develop the high-quality products steadily,” said the spokesman.
