Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is deploying artificial intelligence, advanced analytics and a world-first X-ray inspection technology as it moves to make Dubai’s electricity distribution network more predictive, reliable and resilient.
DEWA is the first utility in the world to use X-ray inspection to examine capacitor bank circuit breakers without affecting their operation or causing damage, allowing engineers to identify internal defects at an early stage and reduce the risk of unplanned outages.
The technology was among a series of innovative projects reviewed by DEWA Managing Director and CEO Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer during a tour of the authority’s Distribution Power complex in Al Ruwayyah.
The initiatives include an Asset Health Centre that uses real-time data on the condition, risk profile and maintenance requirements of network assets to support predictive, risk-based maintenance and optimise the timing of asset replacement.
DEWA is also using artificial intelligence, Big Data and advanced analytics to strengthen asset management and support faster decision-making, the utility said.
Al Tayer said DEWA’s investment in research and development and its focus on employee innovation were helping develop solutions to improve the resilience and efficiency of Dubai’s electricity network.
The authority is also advancing its Distribution Automation programme using RF-Mesh technology, enabling remote monitoring and control of network assets from Distribution Control Centres. The system forms part of DEWA’s Smart Grid programme and is designed to improve network reliability and operational efficiency.
DEWA's accredited laboratories are another component of its technology drive. Its ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited Cable Lab carries out cable testing, root-cause analysis and quality assurance, supporting asset lifecycle management while generating revenue and reducing costs. Its Energy Meter Testing Lab conducts accredited testing of energy meters and current transformers.
The utility also showcased a Mobile Training Unit that provides safety and operational training to field teams. More than 9,200 employees were trained through the unit between 2021 and 2025.
The projects reflect DEWA’s broader strategy of using digital technologies, automation and advanced diagnostics to shift electricity network management towards predictive maintenance while improving service reliability and sustainability.
