Fujeirah Rock and Aggregates (Fujarac) in the UAE recently upgraded its conveyor and feeder system with new machinery from Metsco Minerals.
The equipment further boosts Metsco Minerals' presence at the quarry, which has been using its crushing equipment for several years now.
"Crushing the region's toughest rock with trouble-free operation for almost 18 years, and producing more than 20 million tonnes can, by any standard, be considered proof of reliability by Metso Minerals' crushing line for Fujarac," says a spokesman for the international manufacturer of crushers.
Dynatrade, Metsco Minerals' new distributor for the UAE, supplied three new belt feeders and two belt conveyors to ensure access to Fujeirah Port Authority's purpose-designed 2,000-tonne-per-hour ship-loading conveyor system. The new 4.5-km conveyor belt is part of the port's strategy to improve the efficiency of the dockside areas where aggregates had previously been stockpiled for the region's quarries, awaiting shipment.
The new conveyor line passing alongside Fujarac's secondary crushing line allowed the company to upgrade its own conveyor system to gain direct access to the port's new ship-loading system.
Dynatrade supplied two Metso Minerals belt conveyors at 155 m and 171 m long respectively to upgrade Fujarac's feeds from beneath its own stockpiles.
The new Metso installation also includes three belt feeds, each connected to a 700-tonne-capacity hopper feeding additional sand and aggregates stockpiles directly onto the port's conveyor line.
The crusher produces 7,000 tonnes a day of gabbro diorite, of which 95 per cent is destined for export to Qatar, Kuwait and other neighbouring Gulf states. Additionally, large boulders are shipped to Oman for use on its seaport projects.
Featuring a density of 3.0 tonnes per cu m, the quarry's highly abrasive gabbro is considered to be one of the region's toughest. It is highly recommended for applications demanding conformity to rigid standards and where structures are exposed to a salt environment.
Metso crusher line-up
Fujarac installed Metso Minerals' crusher lines in 1983 with a Nordberg jaw crusher, Symons cone crushers BCS 5 û STD and Symons short head BCS 4ù-inch crusher and 36-inch gyratory crusher.
By 1996, in a move to produce a more enhanced product, with improved cubicity and shape, Fujarac also installed two Barmac 9000 series VSI crushers.
The primary crusher, inputting rock at up to 1 cu m, produces aggregate between 20-120 mm to provide feed material for the quarry's secondary crusher.
At the primary, the feed material is scalped at 20 mm to eliminate any residual overburden and contaminants. These are usually considered weak and fracture at the first stage of crushing, rendering them easy to scalp and remove via a separate conveyor.
The feed material is held in a 100,000-tonne stockpile and conveyed as required to the secondary line via a 850-m-long Metso Minerals conveyor, with 700 m underground.
The Metso secondary crusher produces aggregates at 40 mm, 20 mm, 14 mm, 10 mm and 5 mm, all meeting BS882 standards. The quarry today produces a high quality product crushing 7,000 to 8,000 tonnes a day over two shifts working seven days a week.
Metso Minerals, part of Metso Corporation, is a global market leader in the rock and minerals processing industry. The company focuses on the supply and service of processes and related equipment, which include the brand names Svedala, Nordberg, Trellex, Lindemann and Dynapac
