INternational consulting group Cowi, which has more than 25 years of experience in the Gulf, is focusing on offering the vital three ‘E’s – engineering, environmental science and economics – to the region’s construction sector.
In these efforts, it is Cowi Qatar that is playing the key role in covering the Qatar market.
“Although engineering remains the main component of the majority of our services, economics and the environment now play a highly significant role for the business, something which is unique in our sector,” says Torkel C Rorstrand, managing director of Cowi Qatar.
“Cowi Qatar is an intrinsic part of the Cowi Gulf business which also includes offices in the UAE, Oman and Bahrain. We have been maintaining a strong presence in Qatar for several years and are shortly planning to increase our employee strength to 150 from the current 100, due to the rapid expansion of our business,” says Rorstrand.
“We are currently seeking engineers from all fields who will take part in the new and challenging projects of this country,” he adds.
Cowi Qatar has been involved in string of impressive projects which include the Lusail development – one of the largest and most innovative real estate projects in the region as well as The Pearl Qatar – a multibillion-dollar artificial island which is one of the first to offer freehold and residential rights to international investors. The company has also been a part of significant projects such as Qatar-Bahrain causeway, one of the world’s longest fixed sea link connections at approximately 40 km, connecting the west coast of Qatar with the east coast of Bahrain.
“We currently work within the oil and gas, transportation, marine and environment sectors but will soon start set up a department to cover the building sector. Our core strategy is to have a strong presence in the local markets providing a broad spectrum of services as well as specialised competence within our core business to a wide range of clients,” he adds.
Cowi is described as an International Specialist Leader (ISL) in seven key areas that include major bridges, marine structures, airports and tunnels, environmental due diligence, development assistance, mapping and geo-data. It is currently supplying its ISL services to projects such as airports in Oman and several artificial island and beaches across the Gulf, among others.
Since the company was founded in 1930, Cowi has been involved in more than 50,000 projects in 175 countries, mainly in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the US. It has companies and offices in 35 countries, and project offices wherever it operates. It is staffed with around 4,000 employees, including engineers, biologists, geologists, economists, surveyors, anthropologists, sociologists and architects.
