Wafi Property has announced plans to develop a replica of an ancient suq as a key phase of the current Wafi expansion plan.

The architecture and Islamic authenticity of the Khan Murjan suq, developed following several years of research and consultations with eminent archaeologists, architects and historians, is expected to be unparalleled in the region.
Set to open in early 2007, Khan Murjan will be accessible from Wafi Mall and Raffles Dubai and will include an inspirational selection of artist’s retreats, restaurants, coffee shops and meeting areas within a two-level subterranean suq.
Khan Murjan will be home to 240 purpose-built retail units, with a gross leasable area of 50,000 sq ft. The retail mix will consist of carefully selected and specialised traditional arts and crafts, with influences drawn from as far as Andalusia in Spain to the mountains of Afghanistan.
Introducing a new and innovative leasing strategy, Wafi will provide retailers with fully designed and ready-to-occupy units, ensuring that all businesses will be able to begin trading immediately, without the capital burden of major shop-fitting costs. Through this new leasing method Wafi aims to encourage retailers and small businesses in the region to showcase their works of art in a creative environment, while preserving the historical integrity of Khan Murjan.
Mike Davidson, Director of Wafi Property and Chairman of the Middle East Council of Shopping Centres, comments: “Khan Murjan is very important phase in Wafi’s extensive expansion plan because of its historical and Islamic frame of reference and value to the site experience. We will be tapping into an unexploited niche in the current market, providing a centre for artists and an unforgettable experience for visitors. During the research process we found that most craftspeople are discouraged to invest in retail outlets because of expensive start-up costs.  At Khan Murjan, this burden is subsidised enabling creative minds from all backgrounds to come together under one roof.”
