Towering above Bahrain's tallest building, the Almoayyed Tower, a Liebherr 200 EC-H tower crane has provided lifting duties throughout construction as the project nears handover.
Main contractor, the UAE-based Fujairah National Construction Company (FNC) procured the crane from Inma, Liebherr's tower crane distributor in the lower Gulf countries. Throughout construction, the Imna team was responsible for erection, climbing, dismantling and maintenance of the crane.
The Liebherr crane features a final hook height of 189 m with a jib length of 55 m and a maximum lifting capacity of 10 tonnes at 19.2 m and is fitted with a 65 kW winch to ensure a lifting speed of between 1.3 m/min to 116 m/min throughout the lifting operations.
As the tower structure progressed with construction of the steel decks and concreting, contractors were able to keep abreast of work under way by 'jacking-up' the Liebherr crane and utilising a series of 'ties' to the structure. These were generally spaced every six floors and secured the crane to the tower.
The Liebherr crane was able to maintain lifting duties to ensure that steelwork was lifted and positioned at an average speed of two-storeys per week, says a Germany-based spokesman for Libherr-Werk, the manufacturer of the crane.
"Steel columns, 10.5 m long for three floors, were erected with the supporting floor beams which abut the central core wall at one end," he explains. "The columns were encased in concrete and the exposed steel beams coated with a fireproof cementatious spray paint to offer a two-hour fire-rating."
The central core was constructed using slipforming techniques for the entire height of the building.
Alongside the Almoayyad tower project, FNC has again teamed up with Liebherr on the Ahli United Bank headquarters project; with its fleet of Liebherr cranes.
