The Bahrain-based National Occupational Safety and Health Centre (Osho Centre) will be promoting its comprehensive services in the fields of worker’s protection, the work environment and environmental management, at its Stand 1E68 at the gulfBID exhibition.
These services cater to the needs of the government and private sectors throughout the GCC region.
Among the latest such services is its risk assessment service.
“Osho Centre provides its services to various private organisations in the industrial, construction and general fields in the Middle East, and strives to create a dynamic safety culture within organisations for occupational safety and health to help them achieve their targeted productivity and safety standards,” says Nada Alawi, director.
Osho mainly works in three diffferent fields:
• HSE management, this service is mainly done for construction projects such as the Bahrain Financial Harbour, Pearl Towers, Marriott Executive suites, and Al Areen Water Par;
• HSE training;
• HSE consultations: Some of these services are specialised studies in the fields of safety and occupational health, risk assessment, emergency evacuation plans, safety management systems, etc.
It acts as a house of expertise for these organisations by providing consultancy services such as:
• Implementing and upgrading of policies for occupational safety and health on the organisational level;
• Enhancing compliance with national and international legislation and policies regarding the safety and health of employees, work environment and environmental management;
• Auditing of work environment (conditions and work requirements);
• Providing experienced measurement and evaluation of occupational hazards, pollution in the work and public environment as well as chemical, physical, engineering and biological hazards, as well as the potential industrial catastrophes;
• Improving training and knowledge of technical, legal and health employees in industrial organisations in different fields related to occupational safety, health and working environment, hazards of accidents and self-protection;
• Conducting specialised research and studies;
• Implementation of medical and health check-up of workers subject to the hazards of work pollution; and
• Providing detailed information about the hazards of specific chemicals or physical agents, the means of prevention and special consultation in the case of occupational poisoning or diseases of employees due to exposure to harmful agents.
“Osho Centre in Bahrain works on different levels to meet the rising demands of both the public and the private sectors,” says Alawi. “With the recent increased demand in the fields of construction, industrial and general services, there has been a parallel increase in the need to offer solutions for providing a safe and healthy working environment in the region.”
The company thus concentrates on the following major fields:
Health, safety and environment (HSE) management: This service line allows an organisation to outsource the activities of its HSE department to the Osho Centre. The structure of the HSE management service is usually dependent on the size of the project at hand and the number of people involved. The HSE management group will receive experienced logistic support from Osho Centre’s main office as well as periodic supervision visits and will focus on ensuring HSE maintenance policies within the project and enhance ultimate productivity.
These services are rendered as per requisites such as OHSAS 18001:1999 specifications, company HSE policies and objectives, safety checklists and formats, hazard identification and risk assessment for all activities, daily safety audits, investigation of accidents and recommendation of corrective measures, and the promotion of overall safe working procedures, among others.
The HSE management’s duty roster also includes fire service job responsibilities such as the inspection and maintenance of all fire service equipment and ensuring that they are all in the required working conditions in case of emergencies.
HSE training and awareness: The Osho Centre also works in collaboration with several institutes and organisations in the training and awareness fields of occupational safety, health and relevant diseases. These organisations provide solutions and studies, through specialised courses, that can increase the knowledge and awareness levels of the participants and include the following:
• Preparation of educational curriculum and implementation of specialised training and educational programmes in occupational safety and health, safety engineering and work inspections;
• Assistance in the setting-up and implementation of seminars and workshops in the client’s field of specialisation;
• Conducting dedicated occupational safety and health training programmes related to a specific industry or to a specific topic within an industry.
Among the workshops planned is the Psychological Risk Management workshop, which will be held next month (June 5 to 7). Targeting professionals in the three primary groups of banking and real estate, industrial and construction, the course will address the possibilities of reducing all sources of workplace stress and the manageability of these factors and mitigating the associated risks. Joan Burton, IAPA’s (Industrial Accident Prevention Association) health strategy manger and a specialist in leadership issues and psychosocial risk management will be the chief instructor at this course.
