Jubail Energy wins power plant deal
Jubail:
Saudi Petrochemical Company (Sadaf), an affiliate of Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) and Shell Chemical Arabia, has signed a SR637 million ($170 million) contract with the Jubail Energy Company to build and operate a 250 MW power cogeneration plant at its site in Jubail.

The plant  is expected to start up in the second quarter of 2005. The project will also have 510 tonnes per hour of steam production capacity as part of a 20-year energy conversion agreement.
The Jubail Energy Company is a 75:25 joint venture between National Power Company (NPC) and CMS Generation Company. CMS Generation Company will co-manage the construction and operation through a joint project company.
The new power plant will receive natural gas from Aramco and provide an extra 400 MW to Sadaf's operating units. It will help fulfil Sadaf's expansion of its styrene production with an additional 500,000 tonnes per year (tpy) being added, raising total styrene capacity to 1 million tpy over the next few years.

Aramco awards BOOT desal project

Saudi Aramco has awarded the first desalination project on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis to a consortium led by SETE Technical Services, a member of Latsis Group of Companies. The project is located in the Rabigh Refinery of Saudi Aramco.
The SR75 million ($20 million) EPC phase of the project entails the construction of a new multi-effect distillation (MED) plant with the capacity to supply 10,000 cu m/day of desalinated water, comprising 4,000 cu m/day of process water and 6,000 cu m/day of potable water, to the refinery and its community respectively. The operation and maintenance phase is for 20 years, following which the plant will be transferred to Saudi Aramco.
The other consortium members consist of Aquatech International Corporation of the US as the technology and O&M partner and Zahid Industries & Investments Company as the local partner and co-developer.

Samsung to build butene plant
Jubail:
Arabian Petrochemical Company (Petrokemya), a wholly-owned affiliate of Sabic, has awarded a lumpsum turnkey contract to the Korean company, Samsung Engineering Company for the engineering, procurement and construction of a third butene-1 plant.
The facility will be constructed at Jubail Industrial Area, and is scheduled for completion by the first quarter of 2005. Plant capacity will be 130,000 tonnes per year (tpy) of butene-1.
The value of the contract has not been provided.
