Curtainwall put to the test by Taywood

Taywood ... specialises in dedicated cladding tests.

Taywood Engineering Limited undertook a range of tests to ensure the weathertightness of the curtainwalling at the Al Gurg Tower.

A test rig was installed to subject the samples to constant air flows and water pressures using a wind generator and water spray system during dynamic testing. Testing was conduced according to relevant British or American standards and included the following:

  • Jacking (building movement).

  • Air infiltration and exfiltration.

  • Static air pressure water penetration.

  • Dynamic air pressure water penetration.

  • Wind resistance - serviceability.

  • Repeat static air pressure water penetration.

  • Wind resistance - safety.

  • Controlled dismantle.

    Taywood Engineering Limited (TEL) of the UK, through its technology division, operates the largest independent cladding test facility in Europe. The centre which is dedicated to testing cladding systems has tested well in excess of 1,100 separate cladding samples, from projects all around the world over the past 15 years. TEL is accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service as UKAS Testing Laboratory No.0057 and is approved with Lloyds Register of Quality Assurance for adhoc inservice inspections and tests to ISO 9001.

    TEL is commercially registered in Dubai as Taywood Engineering Limited (laboratory  Dubai branch) for cladding consultancy and testing, from where it can support clients throughout the Middle East.The Dubai cladding technology centre operates as a branch office of the head office in London. The quality systems, procedures, equipment and professionals staffing the office are transferred directly from this main centre. TEL's specialist laboratory undertakes full-scale testing of cladding and curtain-wall systems, operating to the same standards and systems as TEL's UK laboratory.

    The primary services offered by TEL include:

  • Quality management, audit and inspection of new construction, by a proactive approach to quality assurance, seeking to avoid problems occurring.

  • Cladding, curtain-walling, windows, doors and roofing, consultancy, and testing either at its fullscale testing laboratory in Dubai or on site.

  • Laboratory and onsite acoustic testing of facades, building components, HVAC (heating ventilation and air-conditioning) equipment and construction operations/machinery. Laboratory acoustic testing is offered via its UK laboratory, and onsite testing from Dubai.
