New road link for emirates

The UAE Ministry of Public Works and Housing has finalised the design of a new road linking Sharjah with Ras Al Khaimah through Ajman.

The first phase of the highway alone will be constructed at the cost of Dh300 million ($81.68 million). The new road will run parallel to the old one, reducing the traffic load on it, said Ibrahim Al Wahabi, acting director of roads projects.

"The project will be completed in two phases. The first, 27 km long, will start from the Industrial Area in Sharjah to Ajman in the north-east. Then it will connect with the Sharjah-Ras Al Khaimah Road, 10 km from Umm Al Quwain interchange. Five interchanges will be built on this highway," he said.

As part of this project, the ministry will renovate the existing Sharjah road which goes up to Al Shouhada roundabout in Ras Al Khaimah.

Al Wahabi explained that in the second phase, a 90-km road will be constructed starting from Al Sajhah-Al Khawaneej interchange in Dubai, extending from Sharjah-Al Dhaid to Ras Al Khaimah-Al Rams.
