The new Fujairah desalination plant.

Water treatment firm Metito has completed work on a Dh14 million ($3.8 million) contract to build a desalination plant at the Port of Fujairah.

The newly-commissioned plant will directly pump fresh water to ships and barges that dock at the port. It uses reverse osmosis technology and can supply water for more than 10,000 people a day.

The client is the Fujairah Fresh Water Productions Company.

The scope of work included turnkey design, engineering, fabrication, supply, installation, commissioning, full operation, preventive maintenance and all electrical, mechanical and civil engineering components of the work undertaken.

Metito (Overseas) managing director Fady Juez said the desalination plant would help to conserve the scarce water resources in the country.

"Metito has been proud to help the Port of Fujairah to tackle that problem by building a new desalination plant where we treat the abundant supply of sea water and convert it to drinking water which is now being supplied to the ships and barges which use the port," he said.

Metito offers wastewater treatment and desalination solutions for clients that range from hotels to oil installations.

The company runs its European, Asian and African operations from its regional headquarters in Sharjah and has a factory and laboratory facility in the Hamriya Free Zone.
