Jotun takes on its tallest challenge

Burj Khalifa ... a pride for Jotun.

JOTUN Paints, one of the world’s leading producers and suppliers of paints and coatings, says that a total of 122,000 kg of powder coatings and 487,000 litres of paint have been used to decorate and protect Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest tower, inaugurated this month (January 4) in Dubai, UAE.

The mixed-use development by Emaar Properties is the latest project to benefit from Jotun’s   single source solution concept.
The project, previously known as Burj Dubai, required the use of a metallic matt powder coated finish to complement the aluminium for the 28,261 cladding panels that make up the exterior of the tower and its two annexes. To address this unique requirement, Jotun Powder Coatings (JPC) developed a specially-formulated Corro-Coat PE-F Façade Iris and Oyster Bond, a bonded metallic product for this project.

Kristensen ... lasting protection.

This apart, the spire of the 2,684-ft tower has been coated with Baltoflake, a glassflake-reinforced polyester coating that provides outstanding resistance to abrasion, water and most chemicals, says the company. The product was recommended by Jotun and chosen by the client for its 20-year life span and minimal need for maintenance.
“Building the world’s tallest tower is a tremendous feat that requires the highest quality materials and the expertise of construction innovators, and to be among the companies to be part of the team to deliver Burj Dubai is a true honour for Jotun. This project has been a perfect opportunity for us to highlight our best-of-breed paint products and solutions,” says Trine Finnevolden, general manager, Jotun Paints UAE. “In addition to our existing industry-leading products, we have also developed specially-formulated coatings for this outstanding project. This level of commitment, in addition to the proven effectiveness of our pioneering single source solution concept has driven the excellent results we have achieved for the paint and coating works of Burj Dubai.”
Jotun’s industry-leading Jotashield brand has been used for the tower’s 120,000 sq m basement car-park because of its excellent adhesion and moisture resistance features, which protects concrete against ingress of salts and carbon dioxide, she says.

“In addition, 26 custom colour shades from Jotun’s Fenomastic range of emulsion and enamel paints was used for the interiors of the Burj Dubai, which covers a total area of 700,000 sq m. The lead-free and non-yellowing enamel paint also gives a tough yet smooth finish that lasts long and washes easily,” says Finnevolden.
“Our involvement with the Burj Dubai project has allowed us to highlight our capacity to deliver innovative products for specific projects with unique demands for coating and paint solutions. The completion of the paint and coating works on this monumental project marks an exceptional milestone and achievement for Jotun, and stands as a testament to our commitment to the regional market. We are confident that our paint and coating solutions will prove more than satisfactory in protecting the world’s tallest tower against the ravages of climate and pollution for many years to come,” says Ram Ramnath, general manager, JPC UAE.

The Wahooo Park ... protected by Jotun Paints.

Meanwhile, Jotun has supplied industry-leading decorative and protective paint products for Wahooo Waterpark in Bahrain, the largest theme park in the Middle East developed by the UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim group.
Located in Bahrain City Centre and spanning over 15,000 sq m, the water park features a wide mix of slides, chutes and rising rapids, and is the region’s first indoor/outdoor temperature-controlled water park. Due to high daily traffic and environmental factors, the water park required a unique painting solution, which can provide lasting protection as well as attractive and vivid colours that depict the fun-filled atmosphere, says Eirik Kristensen, regional marketing manager – Middle East and North Africa (Mena), Jotun Paints.
Bearing this in mind, the Jotun team has used a combination of its premium products which included Jotafloor for the floorings and Fenomastic Silk for the interiors. The water park’s exterior has been coated with the highly durable and weather-resistant Hardtop XP, as well as pure acrylic Jotashield Heritage Traditional Tex.
“Jotun is committed to meeting the demands and unique needs of the Bahrain market through innovative technology and our involvement in a wide expanse of projects across the region underlines our position as a leader in providing the most versatile paints and coatings solutions,” says Kristensen. “Wahooo Waterpark is one of our current projects and we are proud to have been a part of this excellent project and work with the Majid Al Futtaim Group for this high-profile endeavour.”
As a multi-faceted organisation with more than 37 years of experience in the Middle East market, Jotun Paints has shown its ability to meet the global requirements of high-profile projects at all levels through its new technologies, customised solutions, and extensive technical expertise and support, says Shafique Siddique, country manager, Jotun Paints, Bahrain.
“Jotun Paints has been providing prestigious projects in the region with high-quality, cost-effective decorative and protective coatings, which can withstand extreme levels of ultraviolet (UV) light, humidity, corrosion, high and low ambient temperatures and environmental pollutants to preserve their strength and appearance over the span of their service life cycle,” he says.
“Through our active involvement with a majority of mega projects in Bahrain and the reinforcement of our dedicated sales team and paint professionals across our local branches in the country, we are aiming to further strengthen our presence within this growing market.
