Earthworks for a new 4.1 km long runway and associated taxiways at Abu Dhabi International Airport are well under way with main contractor, the Al Jaber Group and Brazil’s Odebrecht joint venture having taken delivery of five Dynapac CA 512 D single-drum vibratory compaction rollers.
The runway is being built as part of the airport’s $7.1 billion expansion and is designed to handle the national carrier Etihad’s new A380 double-decker aircraft.
All five rollers were ordered through local distributor Inma Gulf Development and Construction.
“The order was won against very stiff competition, with the final decision being made by the contractor for Dynapac’s advanced technology, proven reliability and resale value, making it a good investment for the Al Jaber-Odebrecht joint venture,” says a spokesman for Inma’s Abu Dhabi office.
The Dynapac CA 512 D has been designed for airfield and road construction compacting up to 2,100 cu m per hour. Featuring an operating mass of 15,600 kg, the roller features a drum width of 2,130 mm and is powered by a 129 kW Cummins diesel engine. Initially planned as a fast-track construction of the runway for mid-2007 – timed for delivery of Etihad’s four A380s – the deadline was eased and rescheduled for early 2008.
On-site preparatory work for the runway had been completed by local company Saif Bin Darwish in a six-month rough grading package incorporating site preparation and landfill.
Dynapac, headquartered in Sweden, is a leading global full line supplier of compaction and paving equipment with production facilities in Sweden, Germany, France, Brazil, US and China. Dynapac’s products are sold in more than 115 countries all over the world.
