The basic plan for the Dubai light metro network has been approved and tendering for the project is likely in May or June, according to a report.
The first line, called the red line, will stretch 50 km from the Sharjah border to Jebel Ali. The second, the green line, will stretch 19.2 km.
The routes of the two lines are still being decided and most of the operating costs would be covered by passenger fares, Nasser Ahmed Saeed, director general of the Roads Projects Department at Dubai Municipality and general co-ordinator for the Dubai Rail Project, said.
“The capital cost of the initial network is put at Dh14.3 billion of which Dh5.5 billion will be used for civil engineering work.
Construction of the metro system will be done in two phases. The first phase is expected to be ready by 2010 and the second by 2013.
