A NEW wheel loader from Volvo Construction Equipment (VCE) will makes its debut at Bauma 2001, Germany's top building and construction expo, which will be held in Munich from April 2 to 8.
Elaborating on the features of the new machine, a spokesman says: ''The Volvo 33-tonne L220E wheel loader is the first unit from the E-series to be launched by VCE. With high productivity, low fuel consumption and low environmental impact, this new machine is the ideal primary production unit for rock and rehandling applications.
''No other wheel loader in the 30-tonne class can move as much material per litre fuel as quickly or efficiently as the Volvo L220E.
''The L220E has a 150 mm longer wheel base than previous models, which allows for smooth and stable running, even in the most arduous of rough terrains. A boom suspension system is available as an option, and this provides even more stability through a gas-liquid accumulator and valve system.
''Power is derived from a new turbocharged and electronically-controlled 12-litre diesel engine that produces 92 per cent of maximum torque, 1,530 Nm at 800 rpm, and maximum torque at 1,200 rpm. This provides excellent rimpull and full hydraulic power just above engine idle speed, which equates to fast response, low fuel consumption and low emissions.
''The L220E's load-sensing hydraulic system produces a constant oil pressure and variable oil flow: a variable piston pump directs the oil flow where it is needed the most. Thus, no oil is pumped unnecessarily and when there is no need for oil flow, engine power is redirected to the drivetrain.
''The loader has a countershaft transmission with a PWM-controlled valve system that gives the smoothest possible shifting. The operator just has to select forward, reverse or kickdown, and depending upon engine speed and ground speed, the system chooses the optimum gear. This provides better power and minimal fuel consumption.
''Maximum breakout capability from the ground up is provided by the Volvo TP-linkage lift arm system, which guarantees excellent parallel action throughout the entire lifting range.
''For control and monitoring of operation and performance an integrated electronic network, Contronic 3.0, is provided. This system's three computers monitor operational functions in real time, store all data for analysis and make it possible to re-programme and update the unit's various functions.
''The L220E is equipped with the Cab system Cab Care II that offers an excellent working environment. All air is filtered in two steps in order to obtain the cleanest cab environment on the market. First, the air goes through the fresh air filter, then 90 per cent of the air is recirculated through the main filter. The operator is able to sit comfortably, and operate all controls and instruments as everything has been designed ergonomically to prevent fatigue, thus increase productivity.
''The L220E is free from mercury, cadmium and asbestos, and 90 per cent of the machine can be recycled. The low rev engine is extremely fuel-efficient and fulfils all known emission control legislations.''
