Dubai Cable Company (Ducab), associated with a number of prestigious projects in the region, has added another feather to its cap by supplying power cables and wires to the Mirdif City Centre project.

The company supplied a variety of cables under a contract from mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) contractor ETA (Emirates Trading Agency). ETA started the work on the centre in January 2008 and is expected to complete the work next month.

The range of Ducab products supplied to ETA for this project includes Ducab FR (fire-resistant cables, LSF (low smoke and fumes) cables, XL-LSF wires, PVC outer-sheathed cables and PVC wires, according to Chew Wah Tan, general manager sales and marketing.

Commenting on the company’s contract with ETA on the Dubai airport project, Tan says: “We have an agreement signed with ETA for the Concourse 3 project where the total estimated cables consumption in expected to be valued at around Dh100 million ($27.24 million).”

Last November, the company marked the landmark ground-breaking of the Dh500 million ($136.24 million) project called Ducab-HV, a high-voltage cable systems factory, as a joint venture between Ducab, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity (Adwea) to manufacture cables up to 400,000 volts. The new Special Cables Unit devoted to the oil, gas and petrochemicals sector is already up and running in Jebel Ali, being the most recent expansion in its facilities.

Jointly owned by the governments of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Ducab has one of the most modern manufacturing units in the region located over 590,000 sq m of land in Jebel Ali, and nearly 330,000 sq m in Mussafah, Abu Dhabi. These plants can produce more than 110,000 copper tonnes equivalent of low-voltage, medium and high-voltage (LV, MV and HV) cables. Its product range covers HV cables up to 132 kV, Ducab Powerplus MV cables up to 33 kV, LV power cables, control and auxiliary, wiring and lead-sheathed cables, Ducab-Smokemaster-LSF cables, and Ducab-FR cables, cable components and cable accessories, as well as copper rod that it manufactures in its copper rod plant.

As a world-class quality cable company, Ducab products are type tested throughout the entire manufacturing process and approved by well recognised third-party certification bodies such as Basec UK (British Approval Services for Electric Cables), Lloyds UK, Kema-Netherlands, BRE-LPCB UK (Loss Prevention Certification Board), CPRI India (Central Power Research Institute) and ESMA, UAE (Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Meteorology).

All its factories are ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certified by BASEC (British Approval Services for Cables) however, amongst the regional copper rod manufacturers, Ducab Copper Rod Factory in Abu Dhabi is the first to achieve certifications to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 in GCC, Tan says.

“These certifications are the latest in a string of recognitions achieved by the company, which has twice won the ‘Superbrands’ award for branding excellence, ‘Gulf Excellence Award’ as well as the ‘Dubai Quality Award’, Gold category (2004 and 1998),” he adds.

This apart, last April Ducab was honoured with the ‘Mohammed Bin Rashid Business Excellence Award’ for its achievements in the manufacturing sector; Ducab has also earned other recognitions such as the ‘Investment Corporation of Dubai (ICD) Chairman’s Award’ for Outstanding Economic Value Creation in the Industrial Sector.
