DOKA has once again proved that it is a leader when it comes to formwork after its systems were used in the challenging Iris Bay project.
Iris Bay, a high-rise futuristic tower designed in the shape of a half moon is set to become a new hot spot on Dubai’s skyline. The 40-storey tower is located in the heart of Dubai’s commercial centre, Business Bay, and on completion will house prestigious retail and commercial space of more than 80,000 sq m.
“This futuristic development became a challenge for all-related professionals involved in its construction. The main difficulty was in the formation of a 4.6-m thick and 61-m long curved beam. We decided to use the heavy-duty load bearing towers d2 to safely support the beam so that it could carry the superstructure. These are fast to assemble and configure, and can effectively carry a huge load of the concrete to be poured, reassuring the safety of the site crew,” says a spokesman for Al Habtoor, the project’s contractor.
The tower is elevated above a four-storey podium, which floats over a double height arcade. Featuring a revolutionary ovoid design, the tower comprises two identical double-curved shells, which are rotated and cantilevered over the podium below.
The front elevation of the half-moon-like tower will be made up of seven zones of rotated glass, whilst the back will be a continuous vertical curve. The whole building from level four up to the roof is supported by the core and rest on two curved main beams with a height varying from 4.5 to 11 m, and total of 570 sq m concrete.
