A consortium led by French heavy engineering group Alstom has won a contract worth €1.6 billion ($2.25 billion) to build a 2,000 MW power desalination plant in the UAE.

Alstom said its share of the work was worth €1 billion.
The 2,000 MW power and 591 million litre desalination plant, located in Qidfa, in Fujairah, will support the fast-growing need for potable water and electricity in the Northern Emirates and is expected to be operational by mid-2010.
The power station will be built around Alstom’s GT26 gas turbine, and marks the first time that this technology has been sold in the region.
