Details of waterproofing of a water tank

TeknCoat, a UAE-based waterproofing, insulation and energy-saving specialist, offers proven systems for protecting various components of a structure - right from the water tanks and sump pits to precast boundary walls and planters.

All of TeknCoat's products have been tested both in the UAE and abroad and have proved to be ideal for their applications.

TeknCoat offers a 10-year guarantee on its systems for materials and workmanship.

Water tanks

To ensure a sound waterproofing system for water tanks, the internal face of the tank is checked thoroughly for dryness. All cracks and edges are treated with Technofiller and allowed to cure for 24 hours or till dry, as areas below ground take longer to dry than those on grade. Technoresin -1, a solvent-free component available in two parts, is mixed well using a mechanical mixer and a fine coating is evenly applied first over the entire walls and then over the floor of the tank, depending on the type of the concrete surface. A geotextile material (Fybex) is fixed when the surface is till tacky and allowed to cure for two to three days, till the surface is totally dry. A final coat of Technoresin -2 is applied over all the vertical and horizontal surfaces and allowed to cure for three to four days till completely dry.

Usually for the ceiling of the water tank, where there is zero water pressure, only Technoresin -2 is applied and allowed to cure for two to three days. The tank can be rinsed thoroughly and filled with potable water and tested at regular intervals over a period of one month for any contamination.

TechnCoat has obtained test certificates from Al Futtaim Laboratories,an independent testing laboratory, confirming that the system conforms to the BS -6920 part I: 1990.

This system is the best alternative to FRP (fibre-reinforced plastic) lining, considering the economics. In some new constructions, even the outside face of the concrete tank is treated with Tekn Rl and Tekn R2 prior to backfilling around the tank.

Boundary walls

The surface of the precast concrete boundary wall to be treated is made dust free. The blinding concrete for the precast footings are coated with Tekn R 1 followed three hours later with Tekn R2 and allowed to cure for 24 hours. After the placement of the footing with a neck column, an angle fillet is made with cement sand mixture by the main contractor.

Technofiller is applied around the base of the footings and allowed to cure for 24 hours. After the main contractor places the column and completes grouting, TeknCoat operatives apply a coating of W1 which is followed 30 minutes later by a coating of W2 evenly over the entire surface. This is allowed to cure for 24 hours. The same procedure is followed with the wall panels, with the area below ground being treated with R1 and R2 while the area above ground receives a coating of W1 and W2. Care should be taken to ensure that the coating is not spilled in the joint areas where grouting has to be done with non-shrink grout.

A surface treated by the above method is guaranteed for a minimum of 10 years against any kind of weathering effects, concrete deterioration, and paint peel off in the areas above the ground.

Planter boxes

The best way to waterproof planter boxes at higher levels is as follows: The surface of the planter boxes is thoroughly cleaned of all debris and dampness. Technofiller is applied evenly over all the vertical and horizontal edges and allowed to cure for 24 hours. A coating of Bl followed 30 minutes later by a coating of B2 is applied over the entire horizontal surface and allowed to cure for eight to 10 hours. A coating of Wl followed 30 minutes later by a coating of W2 is applied over the entire vertical surface and allowed to cure, again for eight to10 hours. A layer of Fybex is applied over all the vertical and horizontal surfaces, when the coat is still tacky and allowed to cure for 24 hours. A final coat of R2 is applied over the horizontal and vertical surfaces and allowed to cure for 24 hours, prior to testing with water, filled up to the brim of the planter box.

Sump pits/manholes

The external surface of the sump pit or the manhole is treated with Tekn Rl followed half an hour later by Tekn R2. The only prerequisite for the treatment is that the surface be dry and dust free. The interior of the sump pit or manhole is treated in a similar way to that of the planter boxes except that the geotextile material is not used.

Swimming pools

In both above-ground and below-ground swimming pools, the virgin concrete surface should be sound and free of all concrete debris and dust.

Technofiller is applied over all the horizontal and vertical edges and around the pipe sleeves and allowed to cure for 24 hours. The surface is moistened prior to application.

The two-component V-11 is mixed in the ratio of 1:3 (that is, one part of liquid and three parts of dry powder) in a container and mechanically stirred to obtain a homogenous mixture. This is then applied evenly over the entire vertical and horizontal surfaces and allowed to cure for 24 hours. When the first coat is completely dry, the final coat is applied to a uniform thickness of 1 mm over the coated surface and allowed to cure for four to five days prior to exposure to water. Water tests are conducted for a period as specified by the engineers at site.

TeknCoat has spared no effort in developing the right blend of polyurethane products for effective solutions in insulation, waterproofing and energy saving.

The research and development team is constantly striving to achieve the best, to meet valuable customer needs in terms of both protection and solutions for various civil engineering problems.
